McStajan

Did anyone realize Matt Stajan’s stick that he was using last night at the Leafs Game?  He’s so bad he can’t even use is own sticks!

It’s Bryan McCabe’s Stick.

Schenn Stays

So the “scrapper” Luke Schenn is staying with the Leafs.  Good move or bad?

From TSN.ca:

The 18-year-old defenceman was told by Leafs’ head coach Ron Wilson before practice on Monday that he will be staying in Toronto for the foreseeable future.

Once he appears in his 10th NHL game this season, Schenn will use up the first year of his entry-level contract.  If he hits the 40 game mark with the Leafs, it will count toward a year of service when it comes to filing for free agency in the future.

Should he be sent back to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League later this season, he would not be eligible to return to the NHL unless an emergency injury situation in Toronto arose.

When asked if Schenn would be released to play for Team Canada at the World Hockey Championship in Ottawa, Leafs head coach Ron Wilson gave a quick and concise answser.

“If he’s playing in the best league in the world, why would we have him go play in a teenage tournament?” Wilson said after practice on Monday.

The Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. Schenn’s 10th game would take place the following night when the Leafs visit the New Jersey Devils.

So far this season, Schenn is averaging over 21 minutes per game through eight contests.

Leafs News – Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Your new Leafs captain…s.

The Leafs are deciding to go with five alternate captains this year to replace Mats Sundin.  Each month, three of the five will suit up with the ‘A’ on their jerseys.  Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina, Jamal Mayers, Dominic Moore and Nik Antropov are all getting the nod.

Final Team Cuts.

From the National Post:

Ian White is the new Wade Belak. No, the pint-sized defenceman will not be expected to police the ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But he will start the season as a forward, a dual role Belak filled for Toronto in years past. White’s spot up front may have cost Boyd Devereaux a job. The veteran was placed on waivers yesterday, while defenceman Staffan Kronwall was sent down to the Toronto Marlies.

“Those decisions are always difficult, when you get down to the bottom of the roster like that, and we decided to go younger instead of going with a veteran,” Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher said of his decision to cut Devereaux.

Fletcher placed veteran Mark Bell on waivers on Monday — and Bell is now on his way to the Marlies. Waiving and cutting players is one part of the job Fletcher does not relish.

“You are talking about people,” the GM said. “They are more than hockey players. They are individuals. They have families. They have responsibilities and their life is playing professional hockey – and those meetings are never any fun for anybody.”

Thursday’s Expected Season Opener Lineup.

From the National Post:

Coach Ron Wilson may change his mind between now and Thursday night in Detroit but as of Tuesday morning at practice, the Leafs forward lines and defence pairings looked like this.

Forwards
Alexei Ponikarovsky Nik Antropov Jason Blake
Niklas Hagman Mikhail Grabovski Jiri Tlusty
Alex Steen Dominic Moore Jamal Mayers
John Mitchell Matt Stajan Ian White

Defence
Luke Schenn Tomas Kaberle
Carlo Colaiacovo Pavel Kubina
Mike Van Ryn Jonas Frogren
Anton Stralman

Goal
Starter Vesa Toskala
Backup Curtis Joseph

Not dressed
Ryan Hollweg (suspended for two games)
Nikolai Kulemin (left knee)
Jeff Finger (right foot)

Prairie-son, Luke Schenn, from Saskatoon, Sask, has made the cut, and he also signed his three-year entry level  contract with Toronto on Tuesday. Schenn is only 18-years-old. He is currently living in a hotel — all by himself —  in the big city. Coach Wilson was asked how he thought the kid would cope with the perils of urban life.

“He’s not going to be allowed to read a newspaper, or watch a TV,” Wilson said. “I think he prefers watching Green Acres anyway, because of where he’s actually from. We’ll make sure he gets plenty of DVDs of Green Acres and maybe The Beverly Hillbillies, and shows like that, and he’ll be fine.”

Young Leafs.

From the National Post:

Ten players on the Leafs roster are 25 years of age or younger. Fletcher was asked if Mats Sundin suddenly expressed a desire to return to Toronto, would he be welcome?

“Mats is a different situation,” Fletcher said. “He spent the last 13 hockey seasons here. He has been one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise, and he has given back to the community.

“If Mats wants to finish his career in a blue-and-white uniform, he will finish his career in a blue-and-white uniform.”

In the absence of Sundin, Toronto will start the season by rotating the captaincy among three or four alternate captains to be named Wednesday.

Leafs News – Monday, October 6th, 2008

Welcome to the Leafs Ryan Hollweg; Slapped with a 2 game, no pay suspension.

From NHL.com:

Toronto Maple Leafs left wing Ryan Hollweg has automatically been suspended for two games, without pay, as a result of being assessed his third Game Misconduct within 41 games in the Boarding/Checking from Behind category, the National Hockey League announced today.  He was assessed Game Misconducts under Rule 44.5 – Checking from Behind, in NHL Game #619 (Jan. 5 vs. Edmonton) and Game #797 (Feb. 3 vs. Montreal) in 2007-08 and under Rule 42.5 – Boarding, in the Oct. 1, 2008 pre-season game vs. St. Louis.

According to Rule 23.5, having incurred three Game Misconducts within 41 games, Hollweg is automatically suspended for the Maple Leafs’ first two regular season games of the 2008-09 season – Oct. 9 at Detroit and Oct. 11 vs. Montreal.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Hollweg will forfeit $5,510.76.  The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Rough times continue.  Mark Bell Placed on Waivers.

From CBC.ca:

Bell, 28, was placed on waivers Monday, effectively ending his tenure with Toronto.

The St. Paul’s, Ont., native posted four goals and six assists for 10 points in 35 games last season.

He served a 15-game suspension for an alcohol-related conviction and later missed two months because of a broken orbital bone.

Schenn Remains a Leaf.

From TSN.ca

The Maple Leafs raised some eyebrows when the club announced that defenceman Luke Schenn would be staying with the club for the start of the regular season. Schenn, 18, was selected with the fifth overall pick in June. The Saskatoon native was a standout at training camp, scoring one goal and registering a plus-3 in seven games.

If signed, playing 10 games with Toronto this season would burn the first year of Schenn’s entry-level contract. If he plays 40 games, it will count as a year’s service in the collective bargaining agreement towards unrestricted free agency.

Leafs 2008-2009 Schedule

I have posted the Leafs schedule for the upcoming season on the “Leafs Schedule” page oddly enough. I’m a little baffled about the Leafs not playing on 3 Saturdays this year, however, seeing the western Canadian teams a couple times each makes up for it. 83 days and counting……
