Martin Streek RIP

YouTube Preview ImageLegendary radio announcer Martin Streek, most famous for his work on CFNY/Edge 102 over several decades, before being unceremoniously fired from the station in May, is dead. He committed suicide on Monday.

The news was first reported late Monday night by Mike Boon, based on comments left on Boon’s article about Streek’s firing. Boon’s article about Streek’s death (which has since been updated) was met with no small amount of confusion and skepticism earlier tonight, but Streek’s death has since been confirmed on Twitter by people close to Streek (like Kneale Mann), as well as to Torontoist by several current and former Edge employees who knew him.

David Marsden, CFNY’s founder, wrote on The Southern Ontario/WNY Radio-TV Forum that Streek “put on his wings earlier today, to the shock of most everyone….Good night Martin. We don’t know what forced you to take this step but we do wish you a wonderful and peaceful rest.” According to Marsden, Streek’s final Facebook status update, set on Monday, was:

So…I guess that’s it…thanks everyone…I’m sorry to those I should be sorry to, I love you to those that I love, and I will see you all again soon (not too soon though)… Let the stories begin.
For me, He was the coolest guy at the station and the king of The Kingdom while that club was open. Such an approachable guy always willing to engage in conversation about anything and such a vast knowledge of music. It sad that he is gone and it makes me raise my two middle fingers in the air and say ” FU 102.1!”

  • I did not see this one coming either.

  • i feel bad too, plus i didnt even realize that he was let go by the station a few months ago. i guess with me working evenings those last 2 months i missed the thursday 30 that he usually did

  • I used to sit in the edge studios back in 94-95 during the thursday 30 and try and win tickets from Martin back when he had dreads and a giant braided beard……..Awesome times!!!

  • It’s crazy to think about, but everyone has a Martin story. I think he has given a birthday shout out to almost all of us more then once, and played more then a few song’s on more then a few drunken night’s that we have requested. Not to mention, I didn’t see a post on here for MJ!? Show’s the amount of respect he got from everyone out there.

  • Remember the times when we went to Kingdom and found out that Martin wasn’t going to be there that night? Those were shitty music nights.

  • he always made our “bi-annual” birthday celebrations spectacular

  • i remember once him doing the start of the kingdom show from his car cause he was stuck in traffic and pretty late. i always thought he was a trooper at that station. and where have i been, after reading up on this stuff i didnt realize that barry taylor was let go at the same time as martin. he was my fav dj and he is also a hamilton boy. geez

  • I remember when I was a wee tot, not even of the age of 19, listening to Martin host Kingdom Friday nights, and thinking he was the coolest guy. He was always playing the good stuff that you wanted to hear. He knew what was up. He will be missed.
